The New York Public Library has access to over 800 learning aids and databases for free with your library card, many of which are available from home. While engaging in distance learning due to school closures, these resources may be useful for both educators and students:

Independent Reading, Exploring and Learning

Once logged into some of our Scholastic and TumbleBooks databases, students can independently explore e-books, videos, and games to support their learning in different subject areas. Work with your students’ parents and caregivers on ensuring students know how to log into the database you select.

Scholastic Resources

  • Book Flix
    Classic fiction video storybooks paired with nonfiction ebooks. One of our most popular resources! Includes lesson plans. (Grades PreK–3)
  • FreedomFlix
    Dynamic e-books from Scholastic bring history to life. Includes lesson plans and Google Classroom integration is available. (Grades 4–9)
  • ScienceFlix
    Curriculum-driven science content and articles for students in grades 4–9. Includes short videos, project ideas, and lesson plans. Google Classroom integration available. (Grades 4–9)
  • TrueFlix
    Online resource that helps students hone literacy skills on nonfiction topics. Includes lesson plans. Google Classroom integration available. (Grades 3–9)
  • Scholastic GO!
    User-friendly database for nonfiction topics, and includes videos, images, and standards alignment. Integrates with Google Classroom and provides materials for all level learners. (Grades 3–12)
  • Scholastic Teachables
    Free teaching resources for every subject. Includes lesson plans, mini books, and activity sheets. (Grades PreK–6)

    Collections of talking story books, games, chapter books, and videos. Includes e-books and read alongs. (Grades PreK–6)
  • Biblioteca TumbleBooks
    Collections of Spanish-language read alouds, games, and videos. (Grades PreK–6)

    Collection of online math books, quizzes, and lessons plans. (Grades K–4)
  • TumbleBookCloud Junior
    A collection of videos and chapter books including e-books, read alongs, graphic novels, videos, and audio for middle and high school students. (Grades 6–12)

  • Biography In Context
    Provides biographical information on more than 650,000 people from throughout history, around the world, and across all disciplines. (Grades 6–12)
  • Explora Middle School
    Searches across multiple databases including Middle Search Plus (middle school magazines) and Newspaper Source (full- text of newspapers), with content geared toward middle school students. Sources include popular and academic sources including full-text databases, e-books, and digital magazines. (Grades 5–8)
  • Explora High School
    Searches across multiple databases including Academic Search Premier (full-text magazines and scholarly journals) and MasterFILE Premier (full-text magazines, reference books, primary source documents, and multimedia), with content geared toward high-school students. Articles available in Spanish and French. (Grades 9–12)
  • Learning Express Library
    Test preparation and practice exams in Math and English Language Arts for elementary-, middle-, and high-school students. Tests include: PSAT, SAT, ACT, AP exams, and the GED replacement TASC. Also includes material for continuing education for adults. (Grades 4–12)
  • Literature Resource Center
    Features information on literary figures from all time periods in such genres as fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, history, and journalism. (Grades 6–12)
  • Mango Languages
    Learn a new language with this interactive database that provides step-by-step lesson plans for 71 different languages. Use online or download the mobile app. (Grades 3–12)
  • U.S. History in Context
    Database of most-studied U.S. history topics. Includes primary source documents. (Grades 6–12)
  • World History in Context
    A collection of full-text periodicals, reference works, and primary documents that cover the events, movements, and individuals that have shaped world history. (Grades 6–12)
  • World Book Online
    Encyclopedia articles, maps, and activities for all ages. (Grades 2–12)
