A conversation with Nicole Parker King, Jet Set Candy founder and designer

Who are your biggest inspirations?
Steve Jobs. Andy Warhol. Karl Lagerfeld. Wes Anderson. Martha Stewart. There are a lot of people that I think really leave impressive marks on the world, but I mostly admire those who are prolific, and always creating and putting stuff out there. Not everything will be great but if you do enough of anything, you hone your skills and have a much better shot at creating things worthy of being inspiring.

Where are you from?
Born in Manhattan—I’m a sixth-generation New Yorker—but lived in Dallas for many years so I consider myself to be part Texan too. I moved back to NYC in 2014 after living abroad in India for 3 1/2 years. India, for all its complexities, is so visually stimulating. It was there that I first tried my hand at jewelry designing and it was a great gateway for developing the Jet Set Candy collection. A part of my heart will always belong to magical India.

When/how did you start creating/designing?
I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t creating something! I was always making things in some way, shape, or form and was also always looking at art and design too—my mother says she and my Dad started taking me to the Metropolitan Museum of Art when I was eight months old and that I was staring at all the paintings over my father’s shoulder, even then.

How did Jet Set Candy come to be?
I love to travel and have been to over 50 countries but I could never find the right souvenir—one that was packable, destination-specific and not schlocky. The seed for Jet Set Candy was planted while I was on a trip to Sri Lanka where, after finding only generic t-shirts with sunset designs, and home goods that were authentic but not easily packable, I decided to set out to reinvent travel souvenirs with a line of collectible and stylish wearable keepsakes for travel lovers.

What are you reading now?
Disrobed by Syl Tang. I’m obsessed—it will make you see clothing in a whole new light. This is a must read for just about every nonfiction lover!
