Photography’s longtime love affair with New York City has typically been centered on Manhattan. Photographer William Meyers (1938–) sought to correct this imbalance by taking his camera to overlooked and under-explored locations in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island.

The photographs were presented as part of William Meyers: Outer Boroughs, a 2015 exhibition from The New York Public Library. The exhibition represented Meyers’s selection of images from the project, printed as a portfolio and acquired by The New York Public Library in 2008.

The photos are now available as part of NYPL's Digital Collections—a free database of nearly one million items including prints, photographs, maps, manuscripts, video, and more. This selection below from the Outer Boroughs: New York Beyond Manhattan collection show images from the Bronx from 1990 to 2006.
