Join These Special Guest Librarians and Share Your Book Recommendations at NYPL's New Virtual Branch
As part of our new Summer at the Library program, The New York Public Library has just launched an all-new "virtual branch" where readers everywhere can drop in and share their favorite books to help get more people reading this summer! The virtual branch is a custom-designed interactive augmented reality (AR) effect accessible via Instagram Reels.
We invite YOU to become a guest librarian and join celebrities, authors, and influencers throughout the summer giving book recommendations.
Find out how you can share a recommendation in this virtual space and be sure to follow the Library's channel (@nypl) and #NYPLSummerBookshelf.
To kick things off, we have some fantastic picks from some very special guest librarians:
The Lying Life of Adults
by Elena Ferrante
Italian teenager Giovanna searches for a sense of identity and clear perspectives when she finds herself torn between the refinements and excesses of a divided Naples.
How Do You Live?
by Genzaburō Yoshino; translated by Bruno Navasky
Told in two voices, 15-year-old Copper struggles to confront inevitable and enormous change after his father's death and his uncle writes to him in a journal, sharing knowledge and advice in 1937 Japan.
The Mutual Friend
by Carter Bays
It’s the summer of 2015, and Alice Quick needs to get to work. She’s 28-years-old, grieving her mother, barely scraping by as a nanny, and freshly kicked out of her apartment. If she can just get her act together and sign up for the MCAT, she can start chasing her dream of becoming a doctor...but in the Age of Distraction, the distractions are so distracting. There’s her tech millionaire brother’s religious awakening. His picture-perfect wife’s emotional breakdown. Her chaotic new roommate’s thirst for adventure. And, of course, there’s the biggest distraction of all: Love.
Now, you can share your go-to summer read. Follow the instructions below and add to the #NYPLSummerBookshelf
- Open Instagram Reels. Click the three stars above the record button and search "NYPL" in the effects library.
- Look around to find your favorite spot in our virtual branch to use as a background.
- Press the record button. Tell us who you are and what your favorite summer read is. Even better, show us your book!
- When you’re done filming, post the video to your account. Make sure to tag it with #NYPLSummerBookshelf so @NYPL can help spread the word!
- As always, don’t forget to add closed captions to make sure everyone can enjoy your post. Before uploading, click on the square with a smiley face, then select the “Captions” icon, and Instagram will do the rest.
