This broadside’s verses are apparently inspired by the looming 1920 Mexican presidential election. Pairing the poem with the image of Don Chepito Mariguano seems to underscore the political skepticism of the satirical text, in which a slate of corrupt candidates and low voter turnout lead to the election of a murderous thief.
El hecho de que esta imagen de don Chepito Mariguano acompaña versos aparentemente inspirados en las inminentes elecciones presidenciales mexicanas de 1920 parece subrayar los altos niveles de pesimismo político expresados en el texto satírico en el cual una lista de candidatos corruptos y una baja participación electoral conduce a la elección de un ladrón y asesino.
