Sabrosa barbacoa de calaveras
[Ciudad de] México: Imprenta de Antonio Vanegas Arroyo, 1903
The Vanegas Arroyo broadsides often combine illustrations made by different artists on the same page. Here, we have a female calavera by J. Cortés (left) dancing next to a vignette which we believe is by Posada: a scene of a graveyard celebration including calaveras from all walks of life. For Day of the Dead, people assemble altars at home and decorate them with deceased loved ones’ favorite possessions as “offerings.” They also visit their loved ones’ graves, to clean and maintain them—but also to bring flowers, food, drink, and music to enjoy in remembrance and celebration of the deceased. The broadside's verses invite several calaveras (the altar boy, the pastry baker, and the landlady who loved to drink pulque, a fermented drink from pre-Columbian times) to go grab a bite of barbacoa before it’s all gone, and they’re left with nothing for dinner.
