Articles of Association of the New-York Daily Times and the Weekly Times
The New York Times, the largest metropolitan newspaper in the United States and namesake of New York City’s Times Square, was founded in 1851 as the New-York Daily Times by Henry Jarvis Raymond (1820–1869) and George Jones (1811–1891). They set their penny paper apart with a dedication to objective reporting intended for intellectual readers, rather than sensational “yellow journalism” pitched to a mass audience. In 1871 Jones refused a $5 million bribe from city comptroller and Tweed Ring member Richard B. Connolly, and a series of exposés published from 1870 to 1871 ended the Tweed Ring’s control of City Hall.
Adolph Simon Ochs (1858–1935) purchased the paper in 1896, reiterating its commitment to trustworthy reporting by instituting the slogan “All the News That’s Fit to Print.” This founding document comes from the New York Times Company Records, which the Library received in 2008.
