Preliminary studies for the Broadway production of Death of a Salesman
Jo Mielziner was among the most celebrated and prolific set, costume, and lighting designers of the 20th century. He gave three-dimensional life to the original productions of such Broadway masterpieces as Carousel, The Crucible, The King and I, South Pacific, and A Streetcar Named Desire. In this design for Guys and Dolls, the 1950 Broadway musical adaptation of several of Damon Runyon’s short stories, Mielziner depicts the interior of the Save-a-Soul Mission. Shown below it are his more subdued preliminary studies for the original Broadway production of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman that premiered in 1949, winning multiple Tony awards and the Pulitzer Prize in Drama.
