Album de la construction de la Statue de la Liberté (Photo #12)
This photograph of the construction of the Statue of Liberty in Paris is one of many that the French photographer Albert Fernique took; the Library holds 13 in its collection. Specializing in photographs of engineering and architecture, Fernique captured the intricate and innovative structure of the statue. The copper cladding was designed by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, and the iron skeleton by Gustave Eiffel, whose firm would also design and construct the Eiffel Tower. In this photograph, the statue’s Parisian surroundings emphasize its colossal scale. Bartholdi constructed the statue in Paris before shipping it in pieces to the United States, where it was inaugurated on October 28, 1886.
