“Street Scene A” set design for the Broadway production of Guys and Dolls
Jo Mielziner was among the most celebrated and prolific set, costume, and lighting designers of the 20th century. He gave three-dimensional life to the original productions of such Broadway masterpieces as Carousel, The Crucible, Death of a Salesman, The King and I, South Pacific, and A Streetcar Named Desire. In this design for Guys and Dolls, the 1950 Broadway musical adaptation of Damon Runyon’s short story “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown,” Mielziner’s energetic style and use of color evoke the riotous activity of the musical’s caricature of New York’s Times Square.
