Cue book for the Broadway production of West Side Story
The role of production stage manager (PSM) is to ensure that the creative team’s wishes are realized by the company. At the time of this production, the PSM was usually a man. Ruth Mitchell (1919–2000) was a notable exception. She had worked on the stage management team on two other musicals choreographed by Jerome Robbins, The King and I and Bells Are Ringing. For West Side Story, she assumed the senior role of PSM. This notebook, which once belonged to her staff member Joe Hill, documents all of the cues for lights, sounds, and set movement that the stage manager would call during the run of the show.
