Minister Malcolm X (1925–1965) in Harlem, New York, with a graffiti star and crescent moon on a brick wall behind him
Malcolm X’s multiple public personae included religious movement spokesman, political and human rights activist, community leader, outspoken Black nationalist, and charismatic figure. Richard Saunders photographed Malcolm X in the early 1960s, and a significant portion of his collection captures Malcolm X fulfilling these roles: leading a group of Muslim children on a museum visit, giving counsel to a young Muslim couple, meeting with and teaching temple members, at home with his family, and in private prayer. This photograph depicts Malcolm X as a strong and committed Muslim leader, whose faith is reflected in the symbol behind him.
