Photo of library cardTo facilitate the Library's outreach efforts to NYC schools, we are pleased to offer expanded access to library resources and services through our Educator Cards. This card, available to Educators employed at Pre-K-12 schools as well as staff employed at daycares, camps, afterschools, and homeschooling parents, offer significantly more privileges than those available on personal cards.

Please note: This is a different offering than our partnership with MyLibraryNYC schools.

Your new card includes a variety of unique privileges. Educator cardholders may:

  • Borrow up to 100 items
  • Request up to 50 items
  • Check out books and audiobooks for a loan period of 60 days
  • Access NYPL's hundreds of electronic resources databases, from downloadable books, music, and movies

How do I get one?

Request an application for an Educator Card at any New York Public Library location in the Bronx, Manhattan or Staten Island, or print out a downloadable form here. You must also provide a letter of request on school letterhead or other proof of current employment as a NYC Educator and be prepared to present our required forms of identification. Once registered, your card will be valid through June 30th of the current school year. To renew your privileges in the fall, present the same documentation provided for your initial registration.

My colleagues at other schools are participating in MyLibraryNYC. How can my school get involved?

Participation in MyLibraryNYC is arranged through the DOE's Office of Library Services. For information on the potential participation of your school in the future, ask your School Librarian or Principal to contact that office directly.

What about my students?

We encourage you to contact your neighborhood library location or email schoolvisits@nypl.org to arrange a class visit. You can come to us or we will come to you. Our staff can register students for new or replacement library cards, discuss the range of services available with a library card, demonstrate our web site and online catalog and recommend some great books for students of all ages and reading levels (such as our Best Books for Kids 2015 or Best Books for Teens 2015.

I work at a daycare center. Do I qualify?

Yes! Certified daycare center staff may apply for a NYC Educator card. Proof of certification must be provided at the time of registration/renewal.

I work as a homeschooler. Do I qualify?

Yes! You must provide current & valid certification of your status as a homeschooler to apply for a NYC Educator card. Proof of certification must be provided at the time of registration/renewal.

Key to our outreach efforts to Educators and students is our online catalog. This catalog allows you to learn not only what resources are available at all NYPL locations, but to share those resources with your students and colleagues. You can access the catalog here.

What else do I need to know?

Your card comes with many privileges unique to your status as an Educator  and is intended for professional use only. If you do not already have a NYPL card for your personal use, we encourage you to apply at any NYPL location and ask staff to link the two cards for your convenience.

The following are some important details about the privileges associated with your Educator Card:

Borrowing Limits: up to 100 items may be checked out on your card at any time; 10 DVD maximum at once

Loan Periods: 60 day loan periods on books and audiobooks; standard loan periods on all other items (e.g. DVDs, CDs, magazines)

Renewals: No renewals on 60 day items, up to 10 on all other eligible items; subject to library restrictions governing renewals

Hold Requests: up to 50 holds allowed on eligible items; please cancel any requests that you decide you no longer need

Checkouts: eligible items may be borrowed from any NYPL location in the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island.

Returns: return borrowed items to any NYPL location in the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island. Return them promptly to avoid late charges.

Library Notices: will be e-mailed to you when a requested item is headed your way, when a borrowed item is nearing its due date and when an item is overdue; circulation privileges, including the ability to place holds and borrow or renew items, are suspended if you have received a second overdue notice for any item borrowed and the item must be returned to restore these privileges

Card Expiration: your card will expire on June 30th of the current school year; automatic renewal is subject to your continued employment as a NYC Educator. Use your personal library card for borrowing during the summer months.

These cards and their associated privileges are offered exclusively to Educators employed at schools participating in MyLibraryNYC.

Your new card includes a variety of unique privileges. Educator cardholders may:

  • Borrow up to 100 items
  • Request up to 50 items
  • Check out books, audiobooks and teacher sets for a loan period of 60 days
  • Access to NYPL's hundreds of electronic resources databases, from downloadable books, music, and movies
  • Receive free, two-week delivery of 7,000+ teacher sets, to and from your school

How do I get one?

Speak to your School Librarian for your pre-assigned educator barcode. Pick up a physical MyLibraryNYC Educator Card at any NYPL location in the Bronx, Manhattan or Staten Island.

My colleagues at other schools are interested. What can I tell them?

What about my students?

And teacher sets?

Teacher sets are curated collections of items for grades Pre-K to 12th grade, developed by a collaboration between the Library and DOE, in accordance with the Common Core standards. Sets are available in a range of languages and reading levels. 

 

 

 

There are two types of Teacher Sets:

You can search for Teacher Sets by grade band, subject, topic, and keyword.

Teacher Set subjects include English Language Arts, Spanish Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and the Arts.

Checkouts: teacher sets will be delivered to your school already checked out to you; when they arrive at NYPL's processing center a notice will be e-mailed to you and the item should be available for pickup at your school library within 7 days of receiving this notice

Returns: return teacher sets to your School Librarian and they will be shipped back to NYPL via pre-paid UPS shipping
