About the Division

Stage featuring dancers in masks.

The Billy Rose Theatre Division of The New York Public Library is one of the largest and most comprehensive archives devoted to the theatrical arts. Encompassing dramatic performance in all its diversity, the division is an indispensable resource for artists, writers, researchers, scholars, students, and the general public.

Across a Crowded Room Workshop

Since 2014 The Billy Rose Theatre Division at the Library for the Performing Arts has presented Across a Crowded Room, a free, semi-annual program that provides a space for musical theatre writers and performers and experts to network, create new work together, and develop their skills. In the 2022 edition, we welcome theatre-makers to create a 20-minute musical with guidance from experts, such as Jeanine Tesori.
