Digital Collection

Start teaching immediately using the Digital Collections Portal.  You will find millions of digital items that can be used in a classroom setting.

Moving Image

Many of our moving image items in Digital Collections are not viewable outside of the Library due to rights restrictions. However, we recommend five dance films in the public domain that can be screened in the classroom from any device:

Online Curriculum

To reduce the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in New York City, in-person class visits have been suspended at the Jerome Robbins Dance Division.  Please view our List of Virtual Education Services for our online curriculum options.

As our educational landscape continues to change, the Jerome Robbins Dance Division is committed to assisting teachers to create a consistent learning environment for their students.  Because classrooms have become more focused towards screens and sedentary learning, it is more important than ever to promote a daily dance practice as a way to energize the brain and muscles, reduce stress, and foster community.  Normally, a teacher would fill out our visit request form to book a visit to engage with archival materials in person at the Library.  Currently, during the Covid-19 pandemic, you can use the Online Visit/Consultation Booking Form to book an online visit or consultation with our Dance Education Coordinator and other Dance Division staff using the program examples listed in the List of Virtual Education Services.  When in-person visits are possible again, we will update this website and welcome you back to dance and learn with us at the Library for the Performing Arts.

Exhibits

Voice of My City: Jerome Robbins and New York  exhibit and educator resource guide

New Yorkers see the city as a character in their own personal novels.  Choreographer Jerome Robbins was no different.  Through interviews, drawings, photos, and writings, discover how all of Robbins' love, frustration, and identity as a New Yorker were infused into his choreographic works.  This exhibit is on view from September 26, 2018 - March 30, 2019 at the Donald and Mary Oenslager Gallery, Shelby Cullom Davis Museum, at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.

The education department has created an educator resource guide as a companion to this exhibit, surfacing the important themes throughout Robbins' life and choreographic works.  The themes, specifically his connection to New York City, are highlighted by the objects in the exhibition.  In the guide, there are discussion questions and movement activities to assist the educator with learning outcomes for their classroom or afterschool program.  The guide below is intended for 7, 8, and 9-12th grade students.  Educators are encouraged to plan a trip to the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts to see the exhibition.

Radical Bodies  exhibit and educator resource guide

Radical Bodies: Anna Halprin, Simone Forti, and Yvonne Rainer in California and New York, 1955-1972 opened on May 26, 2017 and closed September 16, 2017.  Many of the archival objects that were presented in the exhibit are in the Jerome Robbins Dance Division’s collection and can be viewed by appointment.  The educator resource guide is a helpful addition to classroom or after school learning outcomes when teaching about postmodern dance, and can be used to complement a visit to the Library.  The guide below is intended for 9-12th grade students.

Book Recommendations

Curators for each exhibit have thoughtfully chosen several titles that are available for checkout or to read in our reference areas to help you as an audience member enjoy the exhibit more thoroughly.  The librarians in the Jerome Robbins Dance Division have added some of their favorites as well.
