NYPL App: Frequently Asked Questions
What devices are compatible with the NYPL app?
The app can be downloaded and used on iOS and Android devices.
Can I check out Library materials using the app?
Yes, patrons can check out materials from our circulation collections while onsite using their mobile device by using Mobile Checkout in the app. To access this self-checkout feature, open the app and go to "Mobile Checkout" where a scanner will appear that you will use to scan the item you wish to check out. Then scan the item barcode that begins with "33333" (usually found at the top of the back cover).
Why does the app require access to my camera?
The app checkout function and ISBN search uses your device camera to scan items. You also have the option to manually enter in your barcode number. To learn about the library and app vendor select Library Information on the homescreen and click on Privacy Policy.
Where are my lists?
The list feature can only be found in our online catalog. To access your list please log into nypl.org.
Why do I have to log in again to pay my fees?
The app itself does not have the payment function. The link on the app leads you to the NYPL website where you can log in to connect to PayPal.
Why do I have to log in again to access databases?
If you are on library Wi-Fi you should not need to log in again. If you are accessing the app outside the library you will need to verify your library account again with our database vendor.
The app is preventing me from checking out materials. What should I do?
The item you are trying to check out may be unavailable to borrow or there could be a pre-existing block on your account. Please check with staff.
Will the app display the e-books I borrowed?
No, the app will only display physical items checked out to your account. To review a list of e-books you borrowed, please visit nypl.org or access your account through SimplyE.
