The New York Public Library’s New Amsterdam Branch to Reduce Service this Summer
Branch’s air cooling system needs to be replaced; Renovation slated for next year
JULY 21 -- The New York Public Library’s New Amsterdam branch in lower Manhattan will begin offering reduced service on Tuesday, July 25 due to a failing cooling system.
New Amsterdam’s decades-old cooling system failed this week, rendering it unable to maintain comfortable temperatures during the hot summer months. Utilizing temporary air conditioning units, the Library will be able to keep a small portion of the New Amsterdam branch open to the public throughout the summer for material pick-up and drop-off.
The branch at 9 Murray Street will resume its full service activities this fall. While New Amsterdam experiences reduced service, patrons are advised to use the Battery Park City Library at 175 North End Avenue for programming needs.
New Amsterdam Library is slated to receive a partial renovation in spring 2018 that will include the installation of a new heating and cooling system. The Library will announce details about the upcoming renovation early next year.
