Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month at NYPL: Reading Recommendations, Programs, and More

September 6, 2022: From September 15 through October 15, The New York Public Library is commemorating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month with online and in-person events, multilingual storytimes, educational tools, archive explorations, and reading recommendations to explore the richness of Latinx and Hispanic culture, literature, history, and art across the country and around the world.

Patrons can explore a new list of reading recommendations for all ages curated by NYPL’s expert librarians—including monolingual and bilingual titles by Latin American authors in a range of formats (print, e-book, e-audiobook, talking book, braille). 

  • Events for Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month at the Library will include:

    • A multilingual scavenger hunt of the Polonsky Exhibition of The New York Public Library's Treasures (available to download and complete at any time)

    • Tues, Sept 20: An evening of poetry and conversationpresented by LIVE with NYPL, the Library’s premier cultural series, and co-hosted with Latinx in Publishing, featuring an all-star panel of Latinx poets—Rio Cortez, Melissa Lozada-Oliva, Darrel Alejandro Holnes, and Gabriel Ojeda-Sagué.

    • Featured archive materials and artifacts in NYPL’s research libraries illuminating Hispanic, Latinx, and Afro-Latinx histories and cultures from countries in Latin America and across the world. 

      • Including an Open House of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building's collection of Latin American incunabula (the earliest books printed in the Americas), maps, prints, and photographs, contemporary literature, history, comic books, and zines in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French Creole, and some Indigenous languages.

    • Storytimes, music, and book displays around NYPL branches!

The celebration of Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month continues the Library’s mission to illuminate the rich multicultural diversity that defines New York City, amplify and champion diverse voices in literature, and provide open access to the world’s knowledge. 

Patrons can also delve deeper into the Library’s collections, exhibitions, and resources, including the Polonsky Exhibition of The New York Public Library’s Treasures, with our digital guide on Bloomberg Connects onsite or from anywhere. For Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month, the app will include a special tour of the Polonsky Exhibition, exploring Hispanic and Latinx histories and cultures as they are recorded and celebrated in the Library’s vast collections.

For those interested in researching Latinx and Hispanic history and culture further, the Library created a list of free online resources. Through the archives, patrons can explore the rich global diaspora and engage with literature, music, art, and more at The New York Public Library’s research libraries and from home. Resources include scholarly journals, genealogical resources, newspapers and magazines, LGBTQ+ resources, and more from our Digital Collections—all accessible for free using a library card.
