Almost nothing is known about J. Cortés, the artist whose scribbly upper-class calaveras are presented here. His calavera catrina (left) predates Posada’s by at least a decade. You can spot Cortés’s catrina and her little skeleton dog appearing in multiple Vanegas Arroyo calavera broadsides. The accompanying text is made up of derogatory satirical epitaphs of male and female domestic servants.
