Kyung-Me : The Narcissist

Kyung-Me’s work explores potential architectures of the subconscious and how images, objects and memory are intertwined to conjure complex and spiritual spaces. Recent solo and two-person exhibitions include Coniunctio with Harry Gould Harvey IV, Bureau, New York, NY, 2019; Poor Thing with Sydney Shen, Hotel Art Pavilion, Brooklyn, 2018; Brooklyn, 2018; Copy Kitty, Selena Gallery, Brooklyn, 2017; and Bad Korean, 17 Essex Gallery, New York, 2016. She is the author of Bad Korean, published by Spaceface Books (2016), and Copy Kitty (2020), forthcoming from 2d Cloud. Her drawings have been published by The New York Times and BOMB Magazine. She received her MFA from the Yale School of Art.

Her project will focus on the archetype of the narcissist who is forever entrapped inside visions of his own idealized image. Using various source imagery from the Picture Collection, she will merge the worlds of K-Pop, North Korean communist dance, and early 1900’s magic shows. These worlds share themes about grand spectacle, public persona, and master manipulation of one’s image. Through this work she plans to explore the uncanny and unique conditions of our contemporary age of narcissism, using historical visual and environmental references from the Picture Collection resources. She envisions a series of collage-esque drawings that reads like a surrealist fever dream, in which the viewer finds themselves peering into a labyrinthian hall of mirrors that reflects our modern age. sunflowercat.com

Laura Glazer: See Also See

Laura Glazer is an artist using curatorial strategies to share exciting stories that she finds in places she lives and visits. Her work is socially-engaged and depends on the participation of other people, sometimes a close friend, and other times, complete strangers. A background in photography and design inform her social practice, and her artworks appear as books, workshops, radio shows, zines, festivals, exhibitions, installations, posters, signs, postal correspondence, and sculpture. Her participatory art project, See Also See, will create social connections in the NYPL Picture Collection through conversation, collaboration, and publication.

She holds a BFA in Photography from Rochester Institute of Technology and is an MFA candidate in Art and Social Practice from Portland State University. She is based in Portland, Oregon, after living in upstate New York for 19 years. lauraglazer.com

Killeen Hanson: An Open-Source Visual Pedagogy for Design-Led Research

Killeen Hanson currently teaches design research within the School of Design Strategies at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City, and consults as a thought partner and design strategist with individuals and organizations pushing the boundaries of what is and what can be. Her ongoing research projects and collaborations explore the power of radical listening, the potential of objects as verbs, and the relationship between education, publication, and civic engagement. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University with degrees in English Literature and French Language and earned a dual MFA in Applied Craft + Design from Pacific Northwest College of Art and Oregon College of Art and Craft.

The primary goal of her project, An Open-Source Visual Pedagogy for Design-Led Research, refines and clarifies 3 existing activities and develops 2-3 additional activities that use the Picture Collection to teach design-led research to undergraduate art and design students. Christian Patterson: Text as Image

Christian Patterson’s conceptually grounded, narratively driven, visually layered work has been described as novelistic, subjective documentary of the historical past, and often deals with themes of the archive, authorship, memory, place and time. It includes photographs, drawings, paintings, objects, video and sound. Patterson is the author of three books, including the critically-acclaimed, award-winning Redheaded Peckerwood (2011, Rencontres d’Arles Author Book Award) and Bottom of the Lake (2015). He is a Guggenheim Fellow (2013) and winner of the Grand Prix Images Vevey (2015). His work is in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and J. Paul Getty Museum among others. He has lectured, mentored and taught widely. He is represented by Rose Gallery, Santa Monica, USA and Robert Morat Galerie, Berlin, Germany.

His project, dealing with text and images, will search for incidental occurrences of words in the Picture Collection folders that have their own visual qualities. He will collect instances of words that carry both linguistic meaning and visual effect, resulting in a visual-verbal synergy.
