La calavera revolucionaria

[Ciudad de] México: Imprenta de Antonio Vanegas Arroyo, circa 1914

The Mexican Revolutionary battles mentioned in these verses suggest they were written around 1914 when the Constitutionalists (or Carrancistas) were fighting the “rebels” Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa. They lament the suffering and death that the violence of war brought to ordinary citizens. The two calaveras present opposite sides: a bourgeois (left) and a rebel, who, by his outfit and moustache style, can easily be identified as Pancho Villa.
